Vibe-Coded App Security: 12 Checks Before Your First User
Built your app with AI tools like Lovable, Bolt, Cursor or Replit? Run these 12 security, privacy and reliability checks before real customers sign up.
AI coding tools have made it possible to go from idea to working app in a weekend. That's genuinely exciting. But "working" and "safe to hand to strangers" are two different finish lines, and AI tools are very good at getting you to the first one.
In July 2025, the dating-safety app Tea had a storage bucket that was left publicly accessible, exposing around 72,000 user images, including roughly 13,000 selfies and government IDs. It wasn't a sophisticated hack. Reports described it as misconfigured Firebase storage that lacked basic protections such as authentication. That's exactly the kind of mistake a quick pre-launch check is designed to catch.
Here are the twelve checks we run first on every AI-built or "vibe-coded" app. You can do many of them yourself this afternoon.
Access and accounts
1. Can User A see User B's data?
Log in as one test user, find a page that shows your own data, and change the ID in the URL or the request to another user's. If you see their information, stop everything. This problem has a name, broken access control, and it's ranked number one in the OWASP Top 10 for 2025, the most widely used list of web application risks.
2. Is your database locked down on the server?
If you use Supabase, Row Level Security must be switched on for every table, with policies that actually limit rows to their owner. If you use Firebase, your Firestore and Storage rules must not allow open reads or writes. Hiding something in the interface does nothing if the database will hand it to anyone who asks directly.
3. Is your admin area really protected, or just hidden?
A hidden "Admin" button isn't protection. Every admin action needs a check on the server that the person is actually an admin. Admins should also use two-factor authentication.
4. Are logins hard to abuse?
Require passwords of at least 12 characters, check new passwords against known breached lists, verify email addresses, and rate-limit login, signup and password-reset forms so a bot can't hammer them.
Secrets and money
5. Are any secret keys in your front end?
Anything shipped to the browser is public. Your database service key, Stripe secret key, or OpenAI or Anthropic API key should never appear in front-end code or in your Git history. If one ever did, rotate it, not just delete it.
6. Can prices or payments be faked?
The server must decide what something costs, not the browser. Stripe webhooks should be signature-verified, so someone can't send a fake "payment succeeded" message to your app.
7. Can one bot run up your AI bill overnight?
If your app calls an AI model, put a per-user daily limit and an overall spending cap in place. One script looping your endpoint can turn a $20 month into a very unpleasant invoice.
Privacy and trust
8. Do trackers wait for consent?
Open your site in a private window and watch the network requests before clicking anything. Analytics and ad pixels that load before consent have become a real legal risk, especially in California.
9. Does your privacy policy match what the code does?
List every third party your app sends data to (analytics, email, AI, payments, hosting) and make sure your privacy policy names them. A policy copied from a template that doesn't match reality is worse than useless.
10. Are your logs leaking personal data?
Check your server and error logs. If they contain emails, phone numbers, tokens or full request bodies, add a scrubber before launch. Logs get shared with vendors and teammates far more often than databases do.
Reliability and first impressions
11. Have you actually restored a backup?
"We have backups" doesn't count until you've restored one into a separate environment and confirmed the data is all there. Write down how long it took. That's your real recovery time.
12. Does it look and load right on a phone?
Test your key pages on a real phone over mobile data. Google's research found 53% of mobile visitors leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. Check for broken layouts, unreadable text, missing images and buttons too small to tap. Your appearance is part of your credibility, especially for a brand-new product nobody has heard of yet.
Why this is worth doing before launch, not after
Fixing a problem before launch is quiet and cheap. Fixing it after real users have been affected means notifications, apologies, refunds, and sometimes lawyers. IBM's 2025 study put the average US data breach at $10.22 million. A small app won't face numbers like that, but even a small incident can be enough to end a young product's reputation.
Attackers aren't waiting, either. Verizon's 2025 report found exploited vulnerabilities were the entry point for about one in five breaches, up 34% year over year.
Where LaunchGate fits
This list is a start, not the whole job. A full LaunchGate pre-launch audit runs well over a hundred checks across security, privacy, legal readiness and reliability. We test real attacks against a safe copy of your app, not your live users, and give you a report with four scores, the evidence behind every finding, and a fix list in the order we'd tackle it ourselves.
We don't promise "hack-proof," because nobody honestly can. What we promise is that we'll look hard, test for real, and tell you plainly what we found, so you and your customers are as protected as we can help you be on day one.
